Gudrun GutDE

" A constructive and highly expressive figure of Berlin's original underground new wave, industrial and electronic scenes, Gudrun Gut spans collagist post-punk through synth-driven techno, infusing her music with evocative, clever vocals and genre-bending complexity.

A musician, producer, DJ and label boss since the '90s, Gut was an original member of Einstürzende Neubauten and formed new wave/punk groups Mania D, Malaria! and Matador. Since then, she's collaborated with Faust’s Hans-Joachim Irmler, Antye Greie (known as AGF), Beate Bartel, Blixa Bargeld, poet Myra Davies, Anita Lane, Thomas Fehlmann and Âme. Outside of making music, Gut founded imprints Moabit Musik to release Malaria's prolific output and Monika Enterprise, known partly for its “4 Women No Cry” series. She launched Berlin-based electronic pop collective, radio show and Tresor and WMF club night Ocean Club with Thomas Fehlmann, has created experimental feminist projects with Monika Werkstatt and participates on the advisory committee for innovative pop music funding institution Musicboard Berlin. Gut's solo catalog recently expanded to include scoring films, videos and radio plays, and in 2016, she remixed songs from concert series Heimatlieder Aus Deutschland, a politically-inclined hybridity of global traditional music from overlapping cultures based in Germany. In hypnotic, glitchy coldwave pop infused with her spoken word vocals, Gut's latest album, Moment, connects the artist's experimental past to a technoid future—it also fittingly features a cover of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging.”

Always on a hunt for new sounds, Gut's recent performances involve improvisation on multiple machines, including at Hamburg's Operation Ton festival, on a Paris bill with Dorit Chrysler and Karen Gwyer, and as part of electronic orchestra Monika Werkstatt in on-stage collaboration with theatre group Showcase Beat Le Mot. At MUTEK, Gut dispatches an experimental live set of synth pop, loops and signature poetic vocals made to, in her words, transport listeners into another dimension."
